DEPRESSION

SYMPTOMS AND BEHAVIORS

-Depressed mood most of the day

-recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent

-marked diminished interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

-psychomotor agitation or slowness

-poor appetite or overeating

-insomnia or hypersomnia

-fatigue or lack of energy

-feelings of worthlessness

-inappropriate or excessive guilt

-low self-esteem

-poor concentration

-difficulty making decisions

-feelings of hopelessness

SUBSTANCE DEPENDENCY

SYMPTOMS AND BEHAVIORS

-develops a need for alcohol or other mood altering substance

-continues to drink or use in spite of mounting and continued         problems

-develops a need for increasing amounts of the substance to get the original effect

-slips further and further away from family and friends

-experiences problems at school or work due to diminished performance or health related problems

-inability to keep promises to stop or cut down use

-getting high or intoxicated on a regular basis

-lying about use, amount and frequency

-becoming defensive or angry when confronted about use

-believes that to have fun, one must drink or use

-experiencing legal problems

-experiencing blackouts (periods of time when using that cannot be remembered)

-experiencing mood swings

-depressed, hopeless, or suicidal feelings
